Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Evaluation of cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.) genotypes under Jammu plains” was conducted at Research Farm, Division of Fruit Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Kashmir university of agricultural sciences and technology, Jammu during the year 2020-2021. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design (RBD) with three replication and ten treatments. Stem thickness ranged from 2.95 cm to 3.15 cm, shoot number 13.61 to 16.07, plant height 90.33 cm to 114.66 cm, leaf area 51.40 cm2 to 62.02 cm2, time to initiate flowering 31.69 days to 62.20 days, time of fruit set 38.48 days to 72.07 days, time of harvesting 86.50 days to 134.28 days, fruit weight 11.10 g to 13.37 g, fruit length 2.00 cm to 3.04 cm, fruit breadth 2.31 cm to 3.47 cm, fruit volume 11.15 cc to 14.71 cc, yield 0.88 kg/plant to 1.26 kg/plant whereas biochemical parameters such as TSS ranged from 9.480 Brix to 12.610 Brix, acidity 0.41 % to 1.10 %, carotenoids 1.13 mg/100 g to 1.60 mg/100 g, pectin 0.53 % to 1.02 %, ascorbic acid 22.41 mg/100 g to 31.12 mg/100 g, reducing sugar 2.68 % to 5.48 %, non reducing sugar 2.55 % to 5.27 %, total sugar 5.22 % to 10.75 %. Resistance to viral infection and fruit cracking ranged from 0 % to 3.70 % and 0 % to 2.00 % respectively. Phenotypic coefficient of variability was slightly higher in magnitude than genotypic coefficient of variability. The magnitude of phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variability were found highest for resistance against fruit cracking (39.40 and 39.77) whereas, the lowest GCV and PCV was observed in stem thickness (1.78 and 2.91) respectively. The genetic advance varied in time to harvesting (25.03) to in stem thickness (0.07). The tremendous amount of diversity was observed in selected genotypes of cape gooseberry with high heritability and genetic advance in the various in the various desired traits. Correlation coefficients showed that fruit length showed positive phenotypic and genotypic correlation with fruit breadth, fruit volume, TSS, acidity, carotenoids, ascorbic acid, reducing sugar, non reducing sugar and total sugar whereas, fruit weight showed positive phenotypic and genotypic correlation with fruit volume, TSS, acidity, carotenoids, ascorbic acid, reducing sugar, non reducing sugar and total sugar. Based on the overall study of all the parameters i.e physical, flowering and chemical in various genotypes, CITH CGB Sel-10 genotype showed maximum plant height, stem thickness, number of shoots, leaf size, time to initiate flowering, time of fruit set, time of harvesting, fruit weight, fruit length, fruit breadth, fruit volume, yield per plant, ascorbic acid, reducing sugar, non reducing sugar and total sugar and it is also resistant to viral infection and fruit cracking. Thus CITH CGB Sel-10 is the most elite genotype among all the other genotypes studied and can be promoted for commercial cultivation under Jammu plains.
