Abstract
Olive (Olea europaea L.), is the world’s second important oil producing fruit crop, following oil palm and is a unique subtropical fruit crop. Owing to congenial growing conditions in Doda and Ramban, Department of Horticulture, Jammu encouraged the farmers for growing olive in the year 1985. However, as pointed out by the Department of Horticulture, Jammu, olive growers faced constraints in adopting the enterprise while some had also discontinued with olive cultivation. Therefore, the study entitled, “A Case Study of Olive Growers of Doda and Ramban Districts of Jammu Region” was carried out to find out the adoption constraints in olive cultivation and reasons for discontinuance of olive cultivation by olive growers. The list of the olive growers containing 78 respondents, 68 from Doda and 10 from Ramban was obtained from the Directorate of Horticulture, Jammu. Being a case study, all the respondents were included in the study and farming experience of majority i.e. 56.40 per cent of respondents was 22 to 44 years. The results revealed that majority (65.40%) of the respondents belonged to middle age group of 48 to 67. Only 12.80 per cent of the respondents were illiterate and majority of them were small and marginal farmers. Also, concerning olive cultivation, majority of the respondents (37.20%) had their respective department of horticulture as the mostly used extension contact. Moreover, 66 (84.60%) were still continuing with the olive cultivation, while 12 (15.40%) respondents had discontinued the olive cultivation. Results of logistic regression analysis revealed that the variables viz., experience in agriculture (p=.034) and distance to pesticide shop (p=.008) were positively and negatively significant respectively in affecting adoption of olive cultivation. Whereas, the results of multiple linear regression analysis revealed that variables viz., mass media exposure (p=0.000), operational land holding (p=0.000), irrigation availability (p=0.043) were significant in affecting the dependent variable, area under olive cultivation. Low returns from olive cultivation followed by snow damage and pest infestation were the major constraints reported by the continuous adopters of olive. Whereas, snow damage followed by low returns from olive followed by unavailability of irrigation and pest infestation were expressed as the major reasons for discontinuance of olive cultivation by the discontinuers.
