Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Studies on the effect of number of
nodes and portion of vine cuttings on (Ipomea batatas L.) cv. Kiran grown under
Southern Telangana conditions” was carried out during the year 2016 – 17 at
College of Horticulture, Mojerla.
The results revealed that, among the number of nodes, N4 (vines with 9
nodes) recorded the highest percentage of crop establishment (93.78 %), longest
vine length (167.65 cm), highest number of branches (16.63), highest number of
nodes (36.68), highest intermodal length (5.56 cm) and above ground biomass
yield (20.98).
Among the cuttings from terminal portion of vine recorded significantly
the maximum crop establishment percentage (92.84%), highest vine length
(159.49 cm), number of branches (15.36), number of nodes (37.44), internodal
length (5.58 cm) and maximum above ground biomass yield (20.98) over the
other two cutting portions.
The interaction effect, N4 (vine with 9 nodes) with cuttings from terminal
portion of the vine recorded the highest percentage of crop establishment (97.26
%), longest vine length (176.86 cm), maximum number of branches (18.2),
number of nodes (40.26), intermodal length (5.86 cm) and highest above ground
biomass yield (21.94) over other interactions.
The results pertaining to yield parameters revealed that, Among the
number of nodes, N4 (vine with 9 nodes) recorded the maximum tuber length
(15.32 cm), tuber diameter (4.75 cm), tuber weight (149.86 g), number of tubers
per vine (7.16), tuber weight per vine (765.18 g), weight of marketable tubers
(14.44 kg), highest total tuber weight per plot (14.71 kg), root yield per hectare
(12.25 t) and harvest index (70.05 %) and least number of days taken to harvest
(119.05).
N4 (cuttings from terminal portion of the vine) also recorded the minimum
unmarketable tubers (0.27 kg) and is on par with N3 (cuttings from middle
portion of the vine) (0.27 kg)
Among the portion of cuttings, P1 (cuttings from terminal portion of the
vine) recorded highest tuber length (14.83 cm), tuber diameter (4.59 cm), tuber
weight (151.54 g), number of tubers per vine (6.13), tuber weight per vine
(734.74 g), weight of marketable tubers (13.81 kg), total tuber weight per plot
(14.22 kg), root yield per hectare (11.84 t) and harvest index (67.62 %). It also
recorded least number of days taken to harvest (119.07) and least weight of
unmarketable tubers (0.413kg).
Among the interaction treatments vine with 9 nodes along with cuttings
from terminal portion of the cuttings recorded the highest value for all the yield
parameters mentioned. Tuber length (16.76 cm), tuber diameter (5.36 cm), tuber
weight (164.04 g), number of tubers per vine (7.86), tuber weight per vine
(844.75 g), weight of marketable tubers (15.69), tuber yield per plot (15.80 kg),
harvest index (72.05 %) and root yield per hectare (13.15 t). The same interaction
effect recorded minimum unmarketable tubers (0.11 kg) and least number of
days taken to harvest (115.66)
