Abstract
The study was conducted to assess the “Internet Addiction and Comorbid Mental Health Problems among Youngsters”. The study was based on 240 adolescents (i.e. 120 rural and 120 urban) in the age range of 18- 20 years. The sample was randomly drawn from eight degree colleges purposively selected from rural as well as urban areas of Ludhiana district. Self-structured general information sheet was prepared to collect the general information of the youngsters. Internet Addiction Test by Young and Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-21) by Lovibond and Lovibond were used to assess the internet addiction and comorbid mental health problems among the respondents. Results revealed significant gender and locale differences in comorbid mental health problems among adolescents. Urban adolescents were more depressed, stressed and anxious than rural adolescents. Females were more depressed, anxious and stressed than males and had more comorbid mental health issues. Significant gender and locale difference existed between internet addiction among respondents. Urban adolescents were significantly ahead of rural adolescents in all the dimensions and overall internet addiction. Also, males were significantly ahead of females in the dimensions of neglect work, excessive use, neglect social life as well as overall internet addiction. A highly significant association existed between depression, anxiety, stress, comorbid mental health problems and all the dimensions of internet addiction among adolescents.
