Abstract
The present study was undertaken on a sample of 200 adolescents randomly selected
from four Government Senior Secondary Schools of Ludhiana city of Punjab. A SelfStructured
Personal Information Sheet and Social Media Usage Questionnaire were
used to document demographic profile and assess Social Media Usage among selected
adolescents. Social Intelligence Questionnaire by Stellar (2014) and Emotional
Intelligence Questionnaire by London Leadership Academy (2016) were utilized to
assess Socio-Emotional Intelligence among respondents. Irrespective of gender
WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram were found to be the most frequently used social
media sites among adolescents. All the respondents predominantly used these sites for
the purpose of spending leisure time. Boys were found to be more frequent and active
users of social media sites in terms of having more number of functional accounts,
duration of usage, varied activities on social media and posts on social media and had
significantly more followers on Facebook and Instagram. Girls as compared to their
male counterparts were better aware about the privacy issues related to social media
usage and refrained from sharing the confidential information but they strongly
perceived it as an influencing platform. Irrespective of gender, majority of adolescents
reported ‘high or medium level’ of Social as well as Emotional Intelligence. Social
media usage was found to be significantly positively correlated with ‘demonstrative
empathy’ and ‘tolerance’ dimensions of Social Intelligence among girls as well as
‘empathy’ dimension of Emotional Intelligence and ‘overall’ Emotional Intelligence
among boys. Further, non-significant contribution of Emotional Intelligence and
Social Intelligence was ascertained towards Social Media Usage among adolescents.
