Abstract
The study was conducted on identification and development of male-sterile (ms) lines in the short-day onion genotypes was carried out at College of Horticulture, UHS campus, Bengaluru during 2017-19 for the exploitation of male-sterility trait in onion. Amongst, the genotypes COHBONC01, COHBONC15, COHBONC18, COHBONC33, COHBONC34 and the selfed lines COHBONC01-S1, COHBONC09-S1,COHBONC14-S1, COHBONC17-S1, COHBONC20-S1, COHBONC27-S1, COHBONC32-S1 were prominent for growth attributing traits. The genotypes COHBONC02, COHBONC05, COHBONC11, COHBONC23, COHBONC27, COHBONC34 and the selfed lines COHBONC01-S1, COHBONC18-S1, COHBONC32-S1, COHBONC34-S1 and COHBONC27-S1 were prominent for yieldattributing traits, purple blotch disease and thrips pest moderate resistance. The genotypes COHBONC03, COHBONC08, COHBONC10, COHBONC17 and COHBONC27 and the selfed lines COHBONC03-S1, COHBONC08-S1, COHBONC10-S1, COHBONC15-S1, COHBONC19-S1 and COHBONC27-S1 were prominentfor quality traits. The correlation co-efficient of plot yield of onion genotypes and selfed lines showed positive correlation withplant height, leaf length, neck girth, fifty per cent neck fall, seventy-five per cent neck fall, total sugars, bulb weight. These traits showed the desirable positive direct effect on plot yieldandwitnessed high heritability (h2) with high genetic advance mean (GAM). Amongst, the genotypes COHBONC05, COHBONC18, COHBONC23 and COHBONC27 and selfed lines COHBONC01-S1, COHBONC05-S1, COHBONC23-S1 COHBONC27-S1, COHBONC28-S1 were prominent for bolting traits. The genotypes COHBONC03, COHBONC05, COHBONC17 and COHBONC25 were contributed for male sterile plants, these male sterile lines and their corresponding maintainer were isolated. The prominent, superior genotypes were valuable source for breeding program for the genetic improvement of onion. The identified male sterile lines need to be improved for their stable performance across the seasons and locations.
