Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Screening of F3 pre-breeding lines of brinjal (IC 261767 x Solanum khasianum) against fruit and shoot borer” was carried out during the year 2019-2020 in the Experimental Farm of Division of Vegetable Science and Floriculture, SKUAST, Jammu. Total 10 pre-breeding lines of brinjal (IC 261767 x Solanum khasianum) were screened for fruit and shoot borer along with other horticultural traits. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The analysis of variance revealed significant differences among genotypes forall the characters. Genotype P-01-2018 took minimum days to 50% flowering (45.92 days), minimum days to first picking (7.37 days), maximum plant height (85.20 cm), maximum weight of marketable fruits per plant (8606.70 g), maximum number of marketable fruits per plant (36.28) and highest total number of fruits per plant (40.73),whereas the genotype P-02-2018 gave maximum number of flowers per cluster (4.87), maximum number of fruits per cluster (3.83) and maximum average fruit weight (247.61 g). Maximum fruit length and maximum fruit diameter were recorded in P-03-2018i.e., 13.11 cm and (8.31 cm) respectively. Highest yield (307.01 q/ha) was observed in P-05-2018. In case of quality parameters maximum phenol content was recorded in check Solanum khasianum (60.65 mg/100g), whereas maximum ascorbic acid content was recorded in P-23-2018 (12.76 mg/100g). With regard to fruit and shoot borer infestation it was observed that maximum infestation occurred during the fag end of the crop i.e., June-July. Genotype P-05-2018 was found to be resistant against brinjal fruit and shoot borer with 1.18% mean shoot infestation, 6.83% mean fruit infestation on number basis and 7.26% mean fruit infestation on weight basis. The genotypes were also observed for visual characters namely fruit colour, fruit shape and presence of spines on leaf and pedicel and the genotypes were categorized with colours such as light green (P-05-2018; P-09-2018; P-15-2018), light purple (P-01-2018; P-02-2018; P-32-2018), light green to light purple (P-03-2018; P-23-2018; P-35-2018), dark purple (P-13-2018) similarly different fruit shapes were observed in different genotypes ranging from round (P-05-2018; P-09-2018; P-23-2018; P-35-2018) to oblong(P-01-2018; P-02-2018; P-03-2018; P-13-2018; P-15-2018; P-32-2018) and on the basis of presence or absence of spines the genotypes were categorized in two categories. One genotype namely P-05-2018was found to be have spines on leaves and pedicel.
