Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Effect of Mulching and Fertilization on Horticultural Traits in Elephant garlic (Allium ampeloprasum L.)” was undertaken in the Division of Vegetable Science and Floriculture, SKUAST-J, Chatha during Rabi season of 2019-20 with three objectives, 1. To study the individual and combined effect of mulches and fertilizers on the growth, yield and quality 2. To study the effects of various treatments on weed management and 3. To work out the economics of all treatments and their combinations. The experiment comprised of four levels of fertilizers viz., RDF of garlic, 20 % less than RDF of garlic, 20% more than RDF of garlic and 40% more than RDF of garlic. For weed management, four mulching treatments viz., No mulch, Rice straw mulch, Sarkanda mulch, Black Polyethylene mulch were studied. All the fertilizer doses were calculated based on the standardized dose of garlic recommended in the Package of Practices for Vegetable Crops (2016) Directorate of Extension, SKUAST-Jammu. Sowing of cloves was done on 31st October, 2019 in the plot size of 2.0 m × 2.0 m at a spacing of 15 cm × 15 cm in RBD (Factorial) fashion, replicated thrice. Results clearly indicated that among all fertilizer treatments, 20% increase in RDF of garlic produced maximum plant height (59.07 cm), leaf width (30.75 mm), leaf area index (4.34), bulb weight (87.49 g), bulb yield per hectare (118.11 q), number of external cloves per bulb (6.98), weight of external cloves per bulb (7.48 g) and yield of external cloves per hectare (1010.25 kg) with a B: C ratio of 3.24. Among mulching treatments, rice straw mulch produced maximum number of leaves (6.59), leaf width (31.25 mm), leaf length (47.67 cm), leaf area index (4.43), bulb weight (83.76 g), bulb yield per hectare (113.07 q), B: C ratio of 2.32 and weed index of 16.86 % . However, all the yield related parameters of external cloves showed non-significant results. In case of interactions, the treatment combination of 20% increase in RDF of garlic along with rice straw mulch resulted in maximum leaf width (35.00 mm), leaf area index (5.61), bulb weight (100.16g), weight of 5 cloves (92.16g), bulb yield per hectare (135.22 q). Thus, it can be concluded that among all the treatment combinations, application of 20 % more than RDF of garlic (NPK @120:60:60 kg/ha + FYM@24 t/ha) along with rice straw mulch resulted in maximum yield (135.22q/ha) and yield related parameters and showed benefit cost ratio of 4.00.This treatment also resulted in minimum weed index (1.0%) in elephant garlic.
