Abstract
A study was conducted to formulate a safe and reliable treatment protocol for tenninating unwanted
pregnancy using progesterone blocker, Mifepristone. Medical termination was done in 6 bitches
confirmed pregnant with gestation ranged between 30 to 42 days. Mifepristone was given at a rate of
2.5 mg/kg body weight orally twice daily. The days taken for abortion] resorption, incidence of abortion!
resorption, side effects and their intensity, level of plasma progesterone through the treatment period
were studied. The mean days required from the start of the treatment to termination of pregnancy with
mifepristone was 4.33:0.61.The intensity of side effects were mild. There was a highly significant
decrease in the plasma progesterone concentration between day O and the day of abortion The study
indicated that mifepristone treatment can be recommended as safe, reliable and effective method for
terminating mid gestation pregnancy following mismating.
