Abstract
The present investigations entitled “Effect of nitrogen fertilization on growth, yield and quality of Kinnow mandarin” were carried out at Rainfed Research Station for Sub-tropical Fruits (RRSS), Raya, district Samba, J&K UT, during 2019-20. The experiment consisted of ten treatments having different levels of nitrogen viz., 10% less than recommended dose of nitrogen, 20% less than recommended dose of nitrogen, recommended dose of nitrogen, 10% more than recommended dose of nitrogen and 20% more than recommended dose of nitrogen and different sources of nitrogen viz., simple urea and neem coated urea and was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. The results revealed that the parameters pertaining to vegetative growth, yield and quality of Kinnow mandarin, showed a significant differences in most of the traits studied. It was found that the best source of nitrogen for growth, yield and quality of Kinnow mandarin was neem coated urea, which gave maximum values for growth, physiological parameters, fruit as well as yield parameters over simple urea. Among different doses of nitrogen, highest dose i.e. application of 20% more than recommended dose of nitrogen through neem coated urea was found significantly superior over other treatments with respect to vegetative growth parameters and physiological parameters but considering the fruit parameters and economics of Kinnow mandarin, application of 10% more than recommended dose of nitrogen through neem coated urea was found economical for the higher yield and quality production of Kinnow fruits. Overall, the best results for vegetative growth, physiological parameters, meteorological parameters, flowering parameters, fruit parameters and yield with good quality fruit production were obtained from the application of 10 % more than recommended dose of nitrogen via neem coated urea.
