Abstract
Water called universal solvent is an indispensable component of an ecosystem. In the management of water resources, quality of water is as imperative as quantity. Agriculture uses the largest water content at global level. Irrigation of agriculture lands account for 70% of the water use worldwide. In several developing countries, irrigation represents up to 95% of all water uses and plays a major role in food production and food security. The suitability of irrigation water mainly depends on the amount and type of salt present in water. The study was conducted in Jammu district of J&K lies at 32º33,07ʺand 33º07,30ʺ North latitudes and 74º27,00ʺand 77º21,00ʺ East longitudes with geographical area of about 3097 km2. In the present investigation, a survey of 200 irrigation water samples both from surface (canals) and groundwater during pre and post monsoon seasons was undertaken for assessing the physico-chemical properties and its suitability for irrigation purpose in agriculture. It was observed that irrigation water was slightly acidic to moderately alkaline in reaction with limited salt content. The EC, TDS, carbonate, sulphate, phosphate, sodium and chloride of irrigation water varied from low to medium and concentration of calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate and nitrate varied from low to high in Jammu district. However, among the tehsils of Jammu district, highest mean of ground and surface water bicarbonate content varied from 214.81 and 159.06 mgL-1, calcium 38.82 and 29.38 mgL-1, magnesium 30.64 and 23.16 mgL-1 and nitrate (35.17 and 26.53 mgL-1) was observed at Akhnoor tehsil of Jammu district respectively. For assessing the sodium hazard of irrigation water few water quality indexes SAR, RSC and SSP were calculated with highest mean values were1.64 and 1.27 meqL-1, -0.96 and -0.97 meqL-1and 23.77 and 23.77 meqL-1for both surface and groundwater during pre and post monsoon, respectively.
