Abstract
Cross sectional studies on diseases of canines of Jammu region with suitable suggestions for preventive measures was conducted during February, 2019 to January 2020. Out of a total of 1982 clinical cases of canines brought for treatment or vaccination (routine checkup) at TVCC, SKUAST Jammu, R. S Pura, 1025 clinical cases were included in this study which were initially subjected to thorough clinical and physical examination and finally confirmed by various suitable laboratory tests. All the disease entities encountered during the study were classified and grouped in 9 different systemic disorders in terms of descending percentage of their incidence as digestive disorders 39.90, cutaneous disorders 26.14, haemoprotozoan disorders 6.83, reproductive disorders 6.34, miscellaneous 5.57, respiratory disorders 5.18, nervous disorders 4.98, metabolic disorders 2.63 and urinary disorders 2.43 per cent, the least. Digestive disorder was a cause of concern with the appearance of gastroenteritis, gastritis, constipation, obstruction as 52.81, 39.36, 5.87 and 1.96 per cent, respectively. Amongst infectious causes of gastroenteritis, haemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE) outnumbered parasitic ones throwing challenge in their management. Other disorders of importance included cutaneous disorder comprising of allergic dermatitis followed by bacterial dermatitis, parasitic dermatitis, fungal dermatitis and mixed dermatitis with incidence of 8.21, 23.89, 29.10, 11.19 and 27.61, respectively. Incidence of cutaneous disorders was seen maximally in monsoon season. Canines were accordingly treated by various need based suitable therapies with early rehabilitation. Regular awareness campaigns against infectious diseases, routine deworming, vaccination and good hygienic measures suggested to check and control the spread of infectious diseases of zoonotic importance.
