Abstract
The present study was conducted to evaluate efficacy of different formulated diets on water quality, pond productivity, survival, growth, gonadal maturity and biochemical composition of flesh of an Indian major carp, Labeo rohita (Ham.). Fish were fed on five different diets viz. D1 ( control diet- 30% rice bran + 70% groundnut meal), D2 (30% rice bran + 50% groundnut meal + 20% fish meal), D3 (30% rice bran + 50% groundnut + 20% mustard meal), D4 (30% rice bran + 30% groundnut meal + 20% mustard meal + 20 % fish meal) and D5 (30% rice bran + 30% soybean meal + 20% mustard meal + 20 % fish meal) @ 3% of fish biomass for 270 days (August 2010 to April 2011). Different diets had no significant effect on the physico-chemical parameters (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, phenolphthalein alkalinity, methyl orange alkalinity, total alkalinity, ammonical nitrogen, nitrite- nitrogen), nutrient status (nitrate-nitrogen and orthophosphate) and pond productivity (phytoplankton and zooplankton population) of water and these remained within the optimum ranges suggested for the carps. 100% survival of fish was recorded in all the treatments. The studies revealed that the different diets had significant effect on growth, maturity and flesh quality of fish. Fishes fed on the diets containing fish meal (D2, D4, D5) recorded higher growth, better gonadal maturity and higher flesh protein content than fishes fed on diets without fish meal (D1, D3). Among diets having fish meal (D2, D4, D5), fish fed on diet D2 resulted in higher somatic growth (35.67, 42.80, 28.10 and 18.48% higher net weight gain than D1, D3, D4 and D5, respectively) and better gonadal development (43.20, 50.08, 22.59 and 23.25% higher absolute fecundity than D1, D3, D4 and D5,respectively) in L. rohita. Hence, it may be concluded that for higher growth and better broodstock development, Labeo rohita may be fed on diet formulated with 30% rice bran, 50% groundnut meal and 20% fish meal
