Abstract
The present investigation entitled, “evaluation of ber (zizyphus mauritiana lamk.) genotypes for morphological and physico-chemical characters” was conducted at Instructional-cum-Research Orchard of Arid Zone Fruit Project, Department of Horticulture MPKV., Rahuri. during 2017-19. The experiment was conducted on two years old tree. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Block Design with twenty eight treatments and two replications. Observations on morphological and yield parameters were recorded from August 2017 to January 2018. In growth characters, canopy volume, yield and yield efficiency are important characters. Tree height ranged from 2.10 to 4.50 m. The maximum tree height was recorded for genotype Banarasi Karaka (4.50 m), while the minimum height was recorded for the genotype Bagwadi (2.10 m). Canopy volume ranged from 5.99 to 33.79 kg/m3 of which the minimum canopy volume was recorded in Bagwadi (5.99 m3), while the maximum canopy volume was recorded in Safeda Rohtaki (33.79 m3). Yield per tree ranged from 3.30 to 6.80 kg/tree. The maximum fruit yield was recorded in the genotype Katha (6.80 kg/tree) and the minimum yield was recorded in Sanaur No.3 (3.30 kg/tree).Yield efficiency is one of the important parameters which ranged from 0.14 to 0.73 kg/m3. The maximum yield efficiency was recorded for genotype Bagwadi (0.73 kg/m3) followed by Reshmi (0.62 kg/m3), S211 (0.46 kg/m3), Banarasi Pewandi (0.45 kg/m3) and Nazuk (0.45 kg/m3 each). Average fruit weight ranged from 3.70 to 22.58 g. The maximum fruit weight was recorded in the genotype S211 (22.58 g) while the minimum fruit weight was recorded in the genotype Sanaur No.3 (3.70 g). Pulp: stone ratio ranged from 4.29 to 27.78. The maximum pulp: stone ratio was recorded in the genotype Katha (27.78) and the minimum pulp: stone ratio was recorded in Sanaur No.3 (4.29). The bio-chemical parameters studied during present investigation much variation. TSS ranged from 8.80 to 21.70 ºBrix, acidity ranged from 0.19 to 0.87%, ascorbic acid content ranged from 54 to 198 mg/100g, Total sugars ranged from 6.20 to 10.30% and TSS/Acid ratio was found to be in the range of 22.25 to 61.05. Genotype S211 was found superior in all the biochemical characters i.e. TSS (16.10ºBrix), acidity (0.49%), ascorbic acid content (112 mg/100g), total sugars (8.90%) and TSS/Acid ratio (32.85). Summing the present investigation, it could be concluded that, the variety having more yield efficiency with less canopy volume could be considered for commercial exploitation or commercial plantation in general and S211 in particular having better qualitative parameters.
