Abstract
The objectives of the present study were to study the participation of rural women in
cattle management and to assess the knowledge, find out the existing practices and
technological needs of rural women in cattle management.
The study was conducted in purposely selected Mavli panchayat samiti of Udaipur
district in Rajasthan. Four villages from panchayat samiti were selected on the basis
of highest population of cattle. The sample consisted of purposely selected 100 rural
women from 4 villages of selected panchayat samiti. Personal interview technique
was used for collecting the data. Percentage, frequency distribution and mean per cent
score were used for analysis of data.
The study shows that 46 per cent respondents belonged to the age group of 18-30
years and 41 per cent were below 31-45 years of age. Majority of them belonged to
reserve cast categories i.e. SC (42%) and OBC (20%), had joint families (48%),
agriculture as their main occupation (46%) and had land holding above 2 hectare
(69%). The outcome of the study reveals that majority of the respondents (60-70%)
were involved in almost activities of cattle management either independently or
jointly with male members of the family. The overall knowledge of the respondents
about improved cattle management practices was average. Component wise
knowledge highlights that they possessed good knowledge in management and
feeding components however, their knowledge was found to be average in
components breeding and health care. The respondents followed improved cattle
management practices to average extent. Their practices were found good in
management component whereas, in breeding, feeding and health care components,
the practices were found to be average. There was overall knowledge gap of 36.30 per
cent and practice gap of 41.75 per cent.
