Abstract
The study entitled “Nitrogen use efficiency of slow release fertilizer applied in rice in inceptisols” was undertaken at Research Farm of Division of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, SKUAST-Jammu, Main Campus, Chatha during summer season of 2018.The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications and thirteen treatments namely i.e. Control (T0), Urea 100% RDF (T1), Neem coated urea 100% RDF (T2), Wax coated urea 100% RDF (T3), Polymer coated urea 100% RDF (T4), Urea 80% RDF (T5), Neem coated urea 80% RDF (T6), Wax coated urea 80% RDF (T7), Polymer coated urea 80% RDF (T8) ,Urea 60% RDF (T9), Neem coated urea 60% RDF (T10), Wax coated urea 60% RDF (T11) and Polymer coated urea 60% RDF (T12). Full dose of P and K was applied as basal dose at the time of sowing through inorganic sources of nutrients viz. DAP and MOP, respectively. The soil of experimental field was sandy loam in texture, slightly alkaline in reaction, low in organic carbon and available nitrogen and medium in available phosphorus and potassium. The results obtained in this study showed that the polymer coated urea @ 80% RDF (performed significantly better than the other treatments for almost all the agronomic yield attributing characters (plant height 130.6 cm, number of tillers 15.3, filled grain per panicle 106.5, test weight 22.9 gm, grain yield 26.07 q ha-1, straw yield 41.23 q ha-1,Biological yield 67.30 q ha-1, N grain uptake 29.46 kg ha-1and N straw uptake 40.41 kg ha-1). Increasing levels of nitrogen significantly increased the number of effective tillers , plant height, filled grain per panicle, test weight , grain yield ,straw yield and biological yield and nitrogen uptake, thereby revealing a significant decline in agronomic nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). The chemical properties of soil viz pH, electrical conductivity, organic carbon, available nitrogen , ammonical nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen was found higher in polymer coated urea 80% RDF and lowest was found under control treatments at harvest stage of rice. Coating of urea with polmer , wax and neem formulation not only increases the grain and straw yields it also increased NUE and nutrient uptake.
