Abstract
The present investigation was conducted in goat rearing area of Pratapgarh district of Rajasthan. There are total five tehsils in Pratapgarh district of Rajasthan out of which four tehsils were selected randomly. Ten goat keepers from each of village were selected thus making a sample of 120 goat owners. The study indicated that majority of goat rearers (61.66%) had annual income between Rs. 70,000 – 1,40,000. Among the educated goat keepers, further (46.66%) goat owners belong to ST category. The overall literacy rate of family head was 51.66 per cent. In study area majority of goat rearers (58.33%) were in 31-49 years age group. The family size of surveyed respondents was less than 5 members (60%) and majority of goat rearers (60.83%) belong to nuclear family. Survey result indicated that 45.83 per cent respondents had less than 1 hectare land. Majority of goat keepers 39.16 per cent depend on agriculture as main occupation. The 44.16 per cent goat keepers adopted semi-stall feeding and goats were usually grazed on community land for more than 5 hours daily. Most of goat rearers (89%) not practice protection of pasture land. The results depicted that majority of goat rearers (45.83%) provide green fodder to whole flock. The Most of 65 per cent goat rearers preserve green fodder, 44.99 per cent goat rearers used fodder like lucerne and berseem and 42.00 percent goat keepers fed concentrate with supplements to their goats. The most (59.16%) of goat keepers provide drinking water using ponds and twice in a day. The most common symptoms observed by goat rearers for heat detection were mounting on another animals and bellowing and only natural service was used due to non-availability of buck semen. Half of goat rearers (50.83%) confirm pregnancy in goats by seeing enlargement of abdomen of goats. 59.16 percent goat keepers did not posses own breeding buck. * PG Research Scholar, Department of Animal Production, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Udaipur (Rajasthan). ** Professor and Director Planning & Monitoring MPUAT Udaipur Maximum respondents (47.50%) reported heat during rainy season, pregnant goats were also housed with others animals. Average age of breeding buck was 16 to 24 month. On the basis of MPS (mean per cent score) the main constraint identified was high cost of concentrate feed and lack of credit facility with the MPS value 71.44 and 69.44. The lack of grazing area was the third most serious constraint with the MPS value 67.44 per cent.
