Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Heterosis and combining ability study for yield and quality traits in bottle gourd [Lagenaria siceraria (mol.) Standl.]” was carried out at the Research Farm of Division of Vegetable Science, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi-12. Crosses were made using 07 diverse parents during the summer- 2019 in 7 x 7 half diallel fashions. Evaluation of parents and hybrids was performed during kharif seasons of the year 2019 in a randomized block design with three replications. Data were recorded for twenty nine parameters including bichemicals and mineral contents in fruits. SSR markers were screened for the genetic purity analysis of the hybrids to develop a more efficient method for genetic purity analysis than the conventional GOT method. The range of mean values in F1 hybrids were higher than that of parents for all the characters studied except days to first fruit harvest, fruit length, number of fruits per plant and copper content. In order of merit, Kashi Ganga, Pusa Naveen and IC 588084 were best performing parental lines for total yield per plant. Combining ability analysis of seven parents and twenty-one F1 hybrids showed significant GCA and SCA effects for all the characters studied. This indicated the importance of both additive and non- additive gene action for the characters under study. Pusa Naveen appeared to be a good general combiner for early maturity, yield components as well as for most of the quality traits. Prevalence of parents both for gca effect and per se performance suggested that mean value of parents for a particular trait may have some predictive significance for its gca effect for that trait. Comprehensive assessment of the hybrids revealed that, the best F1 hybrids showing the highest and significant desirable sca effect for fruit yield per plant in order to merit, were Pusa Santushti x IC 415716 and IC 415716 x Narendra Rashmi. Heterosis studies revealed that, the cross Pusa Naveen x Narendra Rashmi was the best heterotic combination as it exhibited significant heterosis percentage for yield per plant over the standard check parent. The result on gene action revealed over- dominance effect for all the characters studied except fruit length which revealed preponderance of additive component of variance in the expression of fruit yield and its attributes. The narrow sense heritability was low for all the traits under the investigation, indicating the role of that non-additive type of gene action in the inheritance for all the traits except fruit length and sodium content in fruit. In the present study sixty seven SSR markers were employed for testing genetic purity, among them eight SSR primers viz. LSR75, LSR10, LSR99, SSR107, LSR77, LSR15, LSR109, and LSR102 were able to confirm the hybridity of 10 hybrids by producing stable and polymorphic amplification.
