Abstract
The present research work on “Characterization of tuberose (Polianthes
tuberosa Linn.,) genotypes based on phenotypic and molecular characters” was
carried out in College of Horticulture, Bagalkot during 2017-18. Tuberose is
originated from Mexico has chromosome number 2n=30 and belong to
Amaryllidaceae. Among the bulbous flowering crops, it occupies a most important
position due to its highly fragrant waxy flowers. It is commercially cultivated for cut
flowers, loose flowers and also for extraction of its high valued natural flower oil.
Genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance as percent of mean were
assessed by field evaluation for all the characters considered for the study. Genetic
variability revealed high genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic
coefficient of variation (PCV) for number of leaves per plant followed by weight of
bulblets per clump. High heritability was recorded for length of floret, number of
leaves per plant, flower yield per plant and plant height. The genetic advance was
high for number of leaves per plant and plant height. The study showed a highly
significant and positive genotypic correlation for plant height was observed with
number of leaves per plant followed by spike length. The path co efficient study
revealed that the maximum positive direct effect was observed for flower yield per
plant through weight of florets per spike followed by length of floret, number of
florets per spike and number of leaves per plant.
The ISSR marker analysis of tuberose varieties was done using 20 primers and
they generated 243 bands with 97.08 per cent polymorphism. All primers were shown
100 per cent polymorphism except primer UBC 814, UBC 836 and UBC 899. It is
clearly evident from the dendrogram that all the tuberose accessions are grouped into
two major clusters as A and B. The highest dissimilarity co-effeicient value was 0.79
in between Suvasini and Sikkim Selection. Further crop improvement through
hybridization and mutation can be taken up and attempts should be made to improve
cultivars in all aspects by selection.
