Abstract
A field experiment entitled “Effect of Cow Urine Based Bio-stimulant
(CUBS) on Growth, Yield & Quality of Onion (Allium cepa L.)” was carried out
during the late Rabi season in 2018-19 at the experimental field of Organic Farming
Unit, Instructional Farm of Agronomy, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, MPUAT,
Udaipur.
The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replication
and assigning 13 treatments i.e. T1 - Control (Water spray), T2- CUBS spray @ 5% on
45 DAT, T3 -CUBS spray @ 5% on 60 DAT, T4 - CUBS spray @ 5% on 45 & 60
DAT, T5 - CUBS spray @ 5% on 45, 60 & 75 DAT, T6 - CUBS spray @ 10% on 45
DAT, T7 - CUBS spray @ 10% on 60 DAT, T8 - CUBS spray @ 10% on 45 & 60
DAT, T9 - CUBS spray @ 10% on 45, 60 & 75 DAT, T10 - CUBS spray @ 15% on 45
DAT, T11 - CUBS spray @ 15% on 60 DAT, T12 - CUBS spray @ 15% on 45 & 60
DAT, T13 - CUBS spray @ 15% on 45, 60 & 75 DAT. The onion seedling of variety
AFDR was transplanted on 30-31th December 2018 at 40 X 10 cm spacing.
Observations were recorded with regards to growth, yield and quality parameter of
onion.
The results were revealed that T13 treatment (i.e. CUBS spray @ 15% on 45,
60 & 75 DAT) recorded with significantly maximum plant height (21.90, 31.67,
38.33 cm) and number of leaves (4.67, 5.00 & 9.33) at 60, 75 and 90 DAT,
respectively. Whereas, the early maturity of bulb (i.e. 148 days to maturity) was found
under T9 treatments. Similarly, the best value for yield parameter of onion viz., bulb
polar diameter (4.61 cm), bulb equatorial diameter (5.13 cm), bulb yield per plot
(7.37 kg) and yield per hectare (4.09 t), maximum dry matter content of bulb
(13.55%) was found in treatment T13.

The quality attributes were raveled that the maximum value of reducing sugars
content (3.84%) was observed in T9 treatment. The highest non-reducing sugars
content (8.62%) and ascorbic acid content (13.17 mg/100g) was achieved in T13
treatment. While, TSS (13.230B) was found maximum in T8 treatment. Similarly, the
maximum uptake of NPK & S (N 108.21 kg ha-1, P 33.98 kg ha-1, K 85.13 kg ha-1 and
S 95.29 kg ha-1) was recorded in T13 treatment.
Whereas, the spray of CUBS at different time had non significant effect on
bulk density, particle density, organic carbon, pH and EC of soil before transplanting
and after harvest of crop. As far as economics is concerned, significantly the highest
onion yield (4.09 t/ha) and net returns of (Rs 74040 /- ha-1) was also recorded in T13
treatment with maximum benefit cost ratio of 2.62.
