Abstract
India is a developing country, and hence today’s infrastructure and high rise building development is much more demanding in metro cities as well as in developing cities (tier 1, tier 2). In developing cities high rising buildings of 5 to 20 stories are now most widely used. Reinforced Cement Concrete framed construction is generally used for 5 to 20 stories as this system provides sufficient lateral resistance to lateral loading. An earthquake wave is considered destructive to civil structures as it involves the perceptible shaking of the surface of the Earth, resulting from the sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust. The seismic activity of an area refers to the frequency, type and size of earthquakes experienced over a period of time in a particular location. It has been shown in literature that plinth beam in Reinforced Cement Concrete framed building modifies seismic behavior. In present analysis work comprehensive study has been undertaken to compare the behavior of 5, 10, and 15 storied frames with and without plinth beams. The study has been performed for Zone III and Zone IV using STAAD. Pro V8i software. It has been shown from the comparison of results of selected Reinforced Cement Concrete frames that the frames have lesser design forces when plinth beams have been used, Thus, use of plinth beams in Reinforced Cement Concrete frames are advantageous
