Abstract
Adolescence is an important phase of life. It brings about so many changes in terms of
physical, cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual aspects that influence the
development of values. During this stage it is important for an individual to establish
healthy familial, interpersonal and institutional relationships which may have lasting
influences throughout the life-course. The stage focuses upon development of a
positive personal value system and strong interaction pattern within and outside the
family as it is characterized by the increasing importance of social contexts. Keeping
the same perspective in mind, the present study was undertaken with an attempt to
assess the level of personal value system and interaction pattern among early (12-14
years) and late (16-18 years) adolescents belonging to MIG, nuclear families and
residing in Udaipur city. The total sample consisted of 240 adolescents (120 early
adolescents and 120 late adolescents). From 120 adolescents in each category, 60
were boys and 60 were girls. The Scales on ‘Personal Value System’ and ‘Interaction
Pattern’ constructed and standardized by the investigator were used to assess the level
of personal value system and interaction pattern among the early and late adolescents
through frequency and percentage distribution. The data was coded and analyzed
separately for adolescent boys and girls belonging to early and late adolescence stages
in light of the objectives set for the present investigation. Z-test for difference
between two means was administered to compare the level of personal value system
and interaction pattern of the adolescents on the basis of stages and gender. Results
revealed that, majority of the early adolescents were third born whereas majority of
the late adolescents were first born. Most of the respondents had one sibling. Data
related to educational qualifications of the parents reveals that most of the fathers
2
were Graduates, whereas mothers were Intermediate. The data on occupation of
parents concludes that majority of the fathers were equally engaged in service and
business whereas mothers were housewives. Majority of the adolescent boys were
having large peer groups whereas girls were having small peer groups. Regarding the
presence of selected personal values, girls scored higher than boys in dimensions such
as honesty, respect and obedience whereas boys scored higher in punctuality,
cooperation and truthfulness. The adolescent boys and girls showed similarities on
values such as discipline and kindness. On the basis of gender the personal value
system of adolescent boys and girls was found to be almost similar with no significant
difference. In contrary to this, a larger stagewise difference was observed in the
personal value system of early and late adolescents. In interaction pattern, stage-wise
significant differences were observed regarding ‘interpersonal bonding’ with their
parents and siblings, in ‘psychological bonding’ significant differences were observed
with parents and peers and in ‘socio-emotional bonding’ no significant differences
were observed. On the basis of gender, significant differences were observed in
‘interpersonal bonding’ with peers, in ‘psychological bonding’ with the parents and
siblings and in ‘socio-emotional bonding’ with the parents. Overall significant
differences in interaction pattern among the adolescents were observed only with the
‘parents’ on the basis of both stages and gender. On the basis of stages and gender the
personal value system and interaction pattern of the adolescents were found to be
associated with each other and one effects the development of the other. The case
studies were conducted and the factors affecting personal value system and interaction
pattern of early and late adolescents were identified under three major categories i.e.
at individual, family and society level. In light of these factors, key messages were
prepared for the adolescents, their families and teachers for enhancing the personal
value system and intercation pattern of the adolescents.
