Abstract
Marriage is a beautiful relationship in which two people live together and faces so many hurdles together, live so many precious memories together. In marriage two people need to fully understand each other and give their best to make their relationship last forever. The present study was undertaken to assess the marital adjustment, to find out the level of life satisfaction among retired couples and to compare life satisfaction and marital adjustment of single and dual earner retired couples. The total sample for present study was consisted of 60 retired couples that was 30 single earners and 30 dual earners (60 Husbands and 60 wives) belonging to the age range of 60+ years from empty nest stage of family life cycle. A self prepared background information proforma was used to collect the information regarding the personal and background aspects of the subjects. Marital adjustment scale developed by Tiwari et.al. (2017) with some modifications was administered on the subjects to assess the marital adjustment. Life satisfaction scale developed by Ansari (2014) was used with essential adaptations to assess life satisfaction of the subjects. The data obtained were analyzed in the light of objectives set for the present investigation by applying suitable statistical tests. Major findings of the study indicated that majority of the couples had average level of marital adjustment and high level of life satisfaction respectively. It can be seen that more wives were fell in the average level of marital adjustment. There was a significant difference found between single and dual earner retired couples regarding overall and in dimensions i.e. physical and economical aspect. Single husbands and wives too had a significant difference in overall and dimensions i.e. physical and emotional aspect. There was non- significant difference observed between dual earner husbands and wives except in emotional aspect. Husbands were highly satisfied with their life as compare to their spouse. 90 Non- significant difference was found in single and dual earner couples with regard to overall life satisfaction but for health and financial status, routine activities, personal achievements and social relationship dimensions they were found to be significantly different. There was a significant difference found between single earner husbands wives life satisfaction in overall and dimensions i.e. personal and financial status, , routine activities, personal achievements and social relationship. The dual earner husbands and wives had non- significant level difference except the dimensions i.e. physical and health status. There was also a significant difference between overall marital adjustment and life satisfaction of retired couples. In that husband’s results depicted a significance level of difference in their marital adjustment and life satisfaction and the similar results were seen in the case of overall assessment of wives. Thus it can be concluded that marital adjustment and life satisfaction are interrelated and interdependent and affected by gender and occupation also.
