Abstract
The present study was undertaken to analyse the knowledge, use, benefits of elearning
and problem faced by rural youth in accessing it. The study was conducted in
randomly selected 7 Senior Secondary Schools of panchayat samiti Badgaon of
Udaipur district of Rajasthan. A sample of 140 rural youth comprising of 70 male and
70 female respondents were selected for the study. Questionnaire was used for data
collection. Frequency, percentage, mean percent score and z-test were used for the
analysis of the data.
The major findings of the study revealed that majority of the respondents (75 %)
were in 17-18 years of age group, had family income was between ₹36,000 to 1 lakh
(89.29%) and 46.42 per cent respondents belonged to Other Backward Classes. Most
of the respondents’ mothers were illiterate (70%) whereas respondents’ fathers were
educated up to primary level (34.29%) and secondary level (20 %). Most of the
respondents (92.85%) possessed smart phones, television (82.14%) at their homes.
Respondents had smart classroom (64.28 %), personal computers (52.14%) and
laptops (22.85%) in their schools.
Most of the rural youth (97.86%) had average extent of knowledge about e-learning
with 46.80MPS and rest (2.14%) had poor knowledge about it. More than half of the
respondents (56.42%) were using e-learning to medium extent with overall MPS
47.30. Smart phone had high extent of use (68MPS) whereas there was average extent
of use of internet (53.67MPS), audio-video tape (42.14MPS), personal computer
(38.93MPS), laptop (34.21MPS) and CD/DVD (37.41MPS). It was disappointing that
smart classroom had very low extent of use (28.125MPS). Major benefits as
mentioned by the respondents were that e-learning improves performance in

examinations, it provide answer to each and every query, improves studying habits,
helps in preparing notes, learning concepts, provides current affairs, and increases
general awareness with MPS ranging between 68.57 and 75.48.
Respondents faced the problems of lack of skill to access websites and difficulty in
handling internet, not having their own computer, limited time at café and expensive
internet plans. Respondents always faced few technical problems such as virus
problems, slow speed and uncertainty of connectivity. Problem of difficult vocabulary
and content not being available in preferred language was always faced by 29.28-
33.57 per cent of the respondents. Respondents also mentioned that they always get
stress on their eyes, increased fatigue levels due to e-learning and neck muscles were
affected adversely by continuous access of e-learning materials sitting at a place.
