Abstract
The research study entitled “Economic Analysis of Production and
Marketing of ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi) in Chittorgarh District of
Rajasthan” is an attempt to determine the growth rates of area, production and
productivity, cost of cultivation and returns, marketing practices and channels
involved, price spread and producer’s share in consumer’s rupee and problem faced
by the growers in production and marketing of ajwain in Chitttorgarh district of
Rajasthan. The study pertains specifically to Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan, which
was selected on the basis of highest area under ajwain in Rajasthan. Two tehsils,
Rashmi and Gangrar out of eleven tehsils was selected purposively. Four villages
were randomly selected. 80 samples farmers were selected randomly in proportion to
the pooled numbers in each category i.e. small (up to 2 ha.), medium (2 to 4 ha.) and
large (above 4 ha.) farmers from the selected villages. Nimach mandi was selected
purposively to study the marketing practices. The data collected from the growers and
traders for the crop year 2018-19 were analyzed using tabular and functional analysis.
The results obtained by the investigation showed that the compound growth
rates of area, production and productivity of ajwain in Chittorgarh district were, -2.92,
-4.81 and -1.94 per cent per annum, respectively during the year 2007-08 to 2016-17.
The overall cost of cultivation of ajwain crop was estimated as ₹21736.05 (100 %) per
hectare. The break - up of the overall cost showed that about 32.30 per cent of the
total cost was in the form of Machine labour. Rental value of owned land (17.75%)
stood the second highest. Remaining 49.95 per cent cost was shared by other items.
Overall gross income from ajwain during 2018-19 was estimated as ₹52763.25 per
hectare. Average net income over cost C2 and average family labour income was
₹31027.20 and ₹34935.93 per hectare, respectively.

The average return per rupee was worked out to ₹2.42. The average cost of
production was ₹3980.49 per quintal. Overall marketable surplus was 15.35 quintals
per farm whereas marketed surplus was 15.40 quintals per farm. Thus, a little forced
sale was observed on the sample farms.
The four channels were identified for marketing of ajwain. Marketing cost in
the sale of ajwain were ₹1764.40, ₹1563.16, ₹483.27 and ₹281.14 per quintal in
channel-I, channel-II, channel-III and channel-IV, respectively. As such marketing
cost was lowest in channel-IV and highest in channel-I. Marketing margins earned by
different marketing agencies were highest in channel-III (₹1151.28 per quintal) and
lowest in channel-II (₹507.21 per quintal). The producer’s net share was maximum in
channel-IV (97.33 %) and minimum in channel-I (80.44 %). Farmers faced the
problem to non-availability of irrigation (with Garrett score 78.60) was the major
constraint in ajwain production followed by damage of crop due to pests and diseases
(with Garrett Score 59.30), non-availability of quality seed (with Garrett Score
53.85). The constraints faced by farmers in marketing of ajwain produce increase the
malpractice of middleman was the major constraint (with Garrett Score 75.28) faced
by the majority of farmers and hence it was assigned first rank followed by distant
location of market (with Garrett Score 62.42), distress sale due to immediate need of
money (with Garrett Score 49.12), price fluctuation (with Garrett Score 45.00) and
high transport charge (with Garrett Score 43.87) were the various problems reported
by all the farmers irrespective to size of holding. The improved cropping pattern for
ajwain production can improve the productivity of ajwain in the study area. So, efforts
should be made to educate the farmers about the improved practices through
extension exports or agencies.
