Abstract
The study conducted in dogs presented to the Small Animal Orthopaedic Unit of Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital with the history, clinical signs, orthopaedic and radiological evidences revealed 106 dogs affected with patellar luxation that were taken for the incidental studies for a period of one year. The most common breeds affected were Non-descriptive breed, Spitz, Labrador retriever, Pug, Terrier and German Shepherd. Male dogs were found to be affected more and the incidence was found to be more in dogs less than one year of age and the incidence of unilateral medial patellar luxation was more than the bilateral patellar luxation. Dogs with minimal or asymptomatic lameness and Poor owner compliance for surgery were treated conservatively with NSAIDs for pain relief and rehabilitation. 12 cases which did not respond to conservative treatment were selected for surgical treatment with owners’ acceptance. Among the selected animals for surgical treatment, five were Non- descriptive breed of dogs, three were Labrador retriever, two were Spitz, a Pug and Terrier each one. Eight dogs were males and four were females. The age ranged between 8 months to 3 years and their body weight ranged between 9 to 24 kgs. Based on the severity of conformational defects of femoro-patellar joint, depth of femoral-trochlear groove, tibial tuberosity deviation and osteoarthritic changes observed in the femoral trochlear sulcus, the selected dogs were assigned to two groups (n=6) irrespective of breed, age, sex.
