Abstract
The present study “Effect on body condition score, milk yield and milk composition during different stages of lactation in Gir Cows” was carried out at Maharashtra Gopalan Samiti, Sutrakar, Taluka Talasari, District Palghar and Mumbai Veterinary College, Mumbai. Total 24 Gir cows were selected for the experiment in different stages of lactation were subdivided in 3 groups in which 8 animals in each group namely early, mid and late lactation. The Body Condition Score, Milk Yield (kg), fat %, protein%, lactose%, SNF% and TS% at different stages of lactation were 2.98 ± 0.125, 2.99 ± 0.090, 3.35 ± 0.098; 6.48 ± 0.206 kg, 5.64 ± 0.066kg, 4.60 ± 0.210kg; 4.09 ± 0.044, 4.20 ± 0.039, 4.74 ± 0.047;3.79 ± 0.029, 3.81 ± 0.026 and 3.93 ± 0.054;5.25 ± 0.022, 5.23 ± 0.055, 5.08 ± 0.100; 8.85 ± 0.049, 8.77 ± 0.056, 8.92 ± 0.046; 12.94 ± 0.088, 12.97 ± 0.092 and 13.66 ± 0.092 in early, mid and late lactation stage correspondingly. There was significant difference observed in BCS, fat, protein and TS in late stage of lactation whereas, non significant difference observed between early and mid stage of lactation respectively. The mean values of lactose and SNF content of Gir cow milk was non significant at different stages of lactation. The mean values of milk yield was significant in all stages of lactation and the correlation between MY and BCS were significant during whole lactation period. After summarising all the data we can conclude that, the mean values of BCS, milk yield, fat, protein, total solids were significantly affected by different stages of lactation, lactose and SNF percent was not affected by lactation stages in milk of Gir cows. The BCS and milk yield significantly correlated with each other’s in entire lactation. For selection of dairy animals body condition score is an important tool.
