Abstract
The laboratory experiment was carried at Department of Seed Science and
Technology, College of Agriculture, University of Agricultural Science, Raichur, to
evaluate the effect of storage conditions and packaging materials on seed longevity of
onion. The onion seeds cv. Arka kalyan were packed in three packaging materials viz., P1-
cloth bag, P2-polythene bag (700 gauge) and P3- aluminium foil and stored under three
storage conditions viz., C1- ambient condition, C2- conditioned cold storage (18-20◦C, 45-
50% RH) and C3- commercial cold storage (5-7◦C, 65% RH) for a period of ten months.
In the present study, the results revealed that seeds packed in aluminium foil stored under
commercial cold storage (C3P3) recorded highest germination (97.02 %), speed of
germination (35.52), root length (7.99 cm), shoot length (7.60 cm), seedling dry weight
(22.70 mg), SVI (1518), test weight (3.52 g), dehydrogenase enzyme activity (1.311 OD
value), alpha amylase activity (25.02 mm) and lowest moisture content (6.02 %) and
electrical conductivity (0.386 dS-1m) whereas C1P1 recorded lowest seed quality
parameter ( 94.03 %, 33.16, 7.94 cm, 7.53 cm, 21.02, 1455, 3.54 g, 1.282 OD value
23.01 mm, 8.76 %, and 0.392 dS-1m ) at the end of first month of storage. Similarly at the
end of tenth month of storage period, C3P3 recorded significantly highest germination
(91.80 %), speed of germination (27.06), root length (7.52 cm), shoot length (7.36 cm),
seedling dry weight (16.82 mg), SVI (1367), test weight (2.51 g), dehydrogenase enzyme
activity (1.179 OD value), alpha amylase activity (21.34 mm) and lowest moisture
content (6.12 %) and electrical conductivity (0.562 dS-1m) whereas lowest seed quality
parameter noticed in C1P1 (50.01 %, 12.41, 5.12 cm, 4.53 cm, 9.02 mg, 484, 3.42 g, 0.763
OD value, 13.09 mm, 10.10 % and 0.612 dS-1m ). The seeds packed in aluminium foil
stored under commercial cold storage (5-7◦C, 65 % RH) were found to be ideal for
maintaining the seed quality parameters for longer period.
