Abstract
‘Pusa Navrang’ is one of the important early maturing grape variety recommended for juice making in India. The present investigation was carried out during 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 at the Division of Fruits and Horticultural Technology, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. The study was conducted under subtropical climatic conditions. Matured grapevines of ‘Pusa Navrang’ grapes were treated with two elicitors (methyl jasmonate, MeJA and benzothiadiazole, BTH) at three different stages (veraison, 3 days after veraison and 6 days after veraison). Various treatment combinations were studied on various parameters including vine physiological activities, leaf nutrient content, berry-bunch morpho-physico parameters and biochemical parameters (TSS, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid, total phenolics, total flavonoids, anthocyanins and total antioxidant capacities) of treated berries. Application of these elicitors was found very useful for improving various nutraceutical properties of the ‘Pusa Navrang’ grapes. Preharvest application of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) affected majority of the berry biochemical traits applied at veraison stage. Physiological parameters were found least affected irrespective of the concentrations as well as time of application. Leaf nutrient content showed a negative relationship with the 15 mM concentration with respect to the accumulation of macro as well as micro nutrients of leaves. Total soluble solid, titratable acidity, pH and ascorbic acid along with the morpho-physical properties of grape were also least affected irrespective of dose and time of application. Higher concentration of methyl jasmonate (10 mM and 15 mM) elicited the rate of accumulation of total phenolics, total flavonoids, total monomeric anthocyanins and antioxidant capacities estimated by DPPH, FRAP and CUPRAC assay. Elicitor, benzothiadiazole (BTH) was also found very effective in improving the majority of nutraceutical properties of the grape berries. Application of 0.4 mM BTH at veraison as well as 3 days after veraison improved the berry phenolics, flavonoids, total monomeric anthocyanins and antioxidant power. However, it was not found effective against elicitation of ascorbic acid, TSS, berry firmness, pH, physiological and leaf nutrient content. The positive effect of both methyl jasmonate and benzothiadiazole indicated that these treatments could be useful for enhancing the grape phenolics, flavonoids, anthocyanins and antioxidant properties. Key words :- elicitor, methyl jasmonate, benzothiadiazole, anthocyanin, phenolics
