Abstract
Commercialization of briquetting technology, it is essential to know whether the technology was economically viable or not. Therefore an attempt was made for estimation of economics of the briquettes prepared from unused byproducts and other selected biomass produced out of agricultural activities. Every year millions tonnes of agricultural wastes are generated which are either destroyed or burnt inefficiently in loose form causing air pollution. These wastes can be recycled and can provide a renewable source of energy by converting agriculture byproducts into high density fuel briquettes without addition of any binder. This recycled fuel is beneficial for the environment as it conserves natural resources. For this the biomass briquetting is the main renewable energy resource. In this study the raw material including baggase, saw dust, and groundnut shell etc. were densified into briquettes at high temperature and pressure using different technologies. We discuss the various advantages and comparison between charcoal briquetting and biomass briquetting. Apart from problems of transportation, storage and handling, the direct burning of loose biomass in conventional grates gives very low thermal efficiency. To overcome the problem of biomass utilization briquetting is the convenient technique. The current availability of biomass in India is about 1,249 million tonnes for the fulfillment of the demand of energy could be achieved by utilizing the available biomass sources. Per month average net return earned by briquette machine owners amounts to 80,000. In this regard briquetting would form a profit earning activity. Further observed that Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return, Benefit Cost Ratio and Pay Back Period of briquette machine were 4,59,948.61, 13.90 per cent, 1.38 and 4.15 years respectively.
