Abstract
The present study attempts to analyse the existing production and export performance of meat from India, consumption pattern and consumer preferences for different types of meat by individual households and bulk consumers as well as slaughtering practices in Vijayapur district of Karnataka. The study was based on both primary data of 2014-15 and secondary data of 2000-01 through 2013-14. The export of meat from India was highest for beef (5,25,179 thousand tonnes) followed by chicken, mutton and pork. In India, the production of meat was highest in the case of chicken (1,248 thousand tonnes), followed by goat, buffalo and pig. In Karnataka poultry growth rate was 8.11 per cent followed by pork, sheep, goat and cattle, while there was negative growth in buffalo. A majority of the households consumed chicken, followed by mutton, beef and pork as it was required for preparing curry, biyani, fry, etc. Skinless chicken was preferred to chicken with bone and boneless, while mutton and beef with bone and boneless were preferred in both Vijayapur and Indi taluks. Expenditure on purchase of meat by households and consumption at home in Vijayapur taluk was 777 for mutton, followed by beef ( 455) and chicken ( 382). The corresponding figures for Indi taluk were 911, 721 and 403. Most of the sanitary practices followed in slaughtering houses were not according to standard quality norms, except cleaning of animal and cleaning of slaughter house. Use of hand gloves before slaughter was practiced by only 10 per cent of the slaughter houses in Vijayapur taluk. The major problems faced by the consumers were high price of chicken and mutton, fear of diseases in chicken, and poor quality of beef.
