Population Dynamics, Crop Loss Assessment and Management of Shoot Weevil (Alcidodes affaber Aurivillius) IN Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) (Coleoptera : Curculionidae)

Abstract
Investigations were conducted at Main Agricultural Research Station, Dharwad during kharif 2015 to study the population dynamics, crop loss assessment and management of shoot weevil, Alcidodes affaber Aurivillius. The results indicated that the higher infestation of 15.23 adult shoot weevil population throughout the cropping period was noticed in the crop sown at first week of July. Further, the pest density declined gradually with the advancement of cropping period and the crop sown subsequently. The maximum pest population was observed during first week of August to first week of September. Studies on relationship of weather factors with shoot weevil revealed highly significant negative correlation with maximum temperature (r = - 0.70**) and minimum rainfall (-0.18) however, it had positive correlation with minimum temperature (r = 0.75), maximum RH (r = 0.394), evening RH (r = 0.48) and rainfall (r = 0.12). The highest yield of 8,317.90 kg/ha with highest of 84.80 per cent increase in yield over control was recorded in treatment sprayed with Profenophos 50 EC @ 2.0 ml/l + DDVP 76 EC @ 0.5 ml/l at 20, 40 and 60 DAS was significantly superior followed by treatment received spray at 20 and 40 DAS (7,035.80 kg/ha with 82.03 per cent increase in yield). The lowest yield of 1,264.28 kg/ha with 84.80 per cent loss in okra yield was recorded in the untreated control. Among the insecticide molecules evaluated for the bioefficacy against shoot weevil, Profenophos 50 EC @ 2.0 ml/l + DDVP 76 EC @ 0.5 ml/l proved its superiority over other treatments followed by Thiodicarb 70 WP @ 1 g/l + DDVP 76 EC @ 0.5 ml/l which was found to be next best option by recording least number of adult and grub population of shoot weevil, higher okra yield and benefit cost ratio.
