Abstract
Sugarcane plays an important role in world economy. It provides raw material for the second largest agro-based industry after textile. Nutritional value of sugarcane juice per serving (28.35 g) contain Energy-111.13 KJ (26.56 kcal), carbohydrates-27.51 g, protein-0.27 g, Calcium 11.23 mg (1 %), Iron 0.37 mg (3 %), Potassium 41.96 mg (1 %), Sodium17.01 mg (1 %) (Anonymous, 2013). Sugarcane is of great importance in tropical agriculture as a source of sugar and bioethanol (Markad et al., 2014). Besides being the major sugar contributor with more than 70% of the world sugar, sugarcane is important as the raw material for sugar producing and allied industrial. The major sugarcane producing countries are India, Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, Pakistan, China, Philippines, South Africa, Australia and Thailand. It holds a prominent position as a crop in India and occupies about 1.8 % of the total cropped area in the country (Yonzone and Devi, 2018). The rapid progress in the sugar industry sector is largely due to release of high yielding, early maturing and promising cultivars by sugarcane breeders. However, the total productivity of the sugarcane has declined due to increase in stress conditions and other environmental factors associated with sugarcane agriculture (Virupakshi et al., 2002).
