Abstract
In a survey conducted in Tamil Nadu under Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernization and Water- Bodies Restoration and Management Project during 2008-09, it was found that only 35 per cent of cows and buffalo cows were pregnant as against a desirable level of 70 per cent and around one third of cows and buffalo cows were infertile because of anoestrus or repeat breeding. Cattle in rural areas of Tamil Nadu generally suffered from two major reproductive conditions viz. Anoestrus condition (20 – 30 %) and Repeat Breeding (around 10 %). This resulted in an abnormally very long average inter-calving interval of more than two years as against an ideal interval of one year (Veerapandian, 2009). This data indicates that around 15 lakhs cows and buffaloes are infertile out of around 50 lakh breedable cattle available in Tamil Nadu.
