Antibiotic resistance pattern of commonly used antibiotics in the treatment of parvoviral gastroenteritis in dogs

Abstract
PCR. Further the samples were subjected to cultural identification and isolation of bacterial organisms followed by in-vitro antibiotic sensitivity test using antibiotic discs like amoxicillin/ sulbactam, ceftriaxone, cefovacin, amoxicillin/ clavulanic acid and gentamicin. In this study, major organism found among the 50 samples was Escherichia coli. Antibiogram studies revealed that the combination of amoxicillin/ sulbactam (100 per cent) was the most sensitive drug followed by gentamicin (85.8 per cent), cefovacin (62 per cent), ceftriaxone (24 per cent) and amoxicillin/ clavulanic acid (4 per cent). It was concluded that amoxicillin/ sulbactam is effective in treating secondary bacterial infection of Parvo viral gastroenteritis in dogs.
