URINARY IODINE AS MARKER TO PREDICT THYROID HORMONE STATUS IN CATTLE

Abstract
The iodine is one the important component in animal body to maintain the normal metabolic activity and also important for growing foetus to maintain the growth of vital organs including nervous system and avoid abortion and still birth. The present study was carried out to assess the thyroid hormone level in blood through iodine estimation in urine under field conditions. Thirty numbers of adult cows and ten numbers of Buffaloes between 3rd and 4th calving were included in this study. About 10 cows from each breed of Kangayam, Burgur, and Jersey cross and graded murrah buffalo were taken for this study. Blood and urine samples were collected from all the animals to estimate the concentration of iodine in urine and triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxin(T4) level in blood. Approximately 5 ml of blood sample was collected aseptically from jugular vein of each animal in a vacutainer tubes containing K3 EDTA as anticoagulant to separate plasma and stored at -20ͦC.About 10 ml of fresh urine sample was collected from each animal into a clean container and stored at 4ͦC until estimation of urinary iodine. The T3 and T4 hormones were estimated using RIA kits. The urinary iodine was estimated by standard Sandell Kolth off /Ammonium persulfate method. The results revealed that the iodine (μg/L) values were significantly (p≤0.01) higher in Kangayam cows (141.99±12.03) compared with Burgur (70.35± 5.81), Jersey cross (85.40±8.94) breeds of cow and in Murrah buffalo (73.40±17.14). The T3 (nmol/L) levels were 2.06±0.12, 0.61±0.07, 2.32±0.15 and 0.66±0.15 differed significantly (p≤0.01) between breeds. Similarly T4 (nmol/L) values were (41.72±2.40, 9.44±2.07, 56.51±1.90) differed significantly (p≤0.01) between all the three breeds of cows. The result concluded that urinary iodine may be taken as marker to estimate the level of triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxin(T4) in blood. However large numbers of samples are required before to arrive at prediction equation.
