HEMOGLOBIN, BLOOD BIOCHEMICAL AND PROGESTERONE HORMONE PROFILE IN ANESTRUS DAIRY ANIMALS

Abstract
The study was undertaken in Namakkal, Karur and Erode districts of Tamilnadu to explore the haemoglobin, blood biochemical and progesterone profile in anestrus cows and buffaloes. Healthy crossbred cows and buffaloes, which did not express postpartum first estrus for more than 3 months and 5 months respectively, were examined gyneco-clinically twice at 10 days interval. Those animals having smooth ovaries with no palpable structures and having no clinically detectable abnormalities in their genital tract were categorized as true anestrus animals. A total of 250 animals (147 cows and 103 buffaloes) were utilized for the study. Regular cyclic animals both in cows (10Nos.) and buffaloes (10Nos.) were utilized for comparison. The jugular blood samples were collected and the plasma biochemical profile (Total cholesterol, Triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, Calcium and Phosphorus) was estimated using commercial diagnostic kits. The results obtained were compared with the blood profile of regular cyclical animals. Hemoglobin (g%) level did not vary between cyclic cows (10.20±3.56) and buffaloes(9.80±4.13) and anestrus cows (9.53±1.21) and buffaloes (9.60±1.75). The results of the biochemical profile estimation indicated that the calcium, phosphorus, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol and haemoglobin did not show any variation between cyclic and anestrus state in both the cows and buffaloes. However, the total cholesterol (mg%) level was significantly decreased (p<0.05) in the anestrus animals compared to cyclical animals. Similarly, progesterone (ng/ml) level also significantly decreased (p<0.05) in the anestrus animals compared to cyclical animals. It could be inferred from this study that the total cholesterol and progesterone level is lower in anestrus state in dairy animals.
