Abstract
Present study was undertaken to ascertain the effect of progesterone impregnated intravaginal sponges on reproductive performance in cattle and buffaloes. Healthy female, in the reproductive stage of second to fourth parity, which did not express estrus signs for more than 3 months postpartum in crossbred cows and 5 months in buffaloes were examined gyneco-clinically twice at 10 days interval. Those animals with smooth ovaries with no palpable structures and clinically no detectable abnormalities in their genital tract were categorized as true anestrus animals. A total of 250 animals (147 cows and 103 buffaloes) selected from Namakkal, Karur and Erode of districts Tamilnadu were utilized for the study. The progesterone impregnated sponges (containing natural micronized progesterone, 1.5g) were inserted intravaginally in anestrus animals. The vaginal sponges were retained for 9 days in situ and removed on 10th day. The in situ retention rate of sponges was 100% in both cows and buffaloes. About 141 out of 147 cows and 96 out of 103 buffaloes were induced to estrus and thus yielded estrus induction rate of 95.23 and 93.10 % in cows and buffaloes respectively. Out of the animals induced to estrus, 59.0%, 30.8% and 10.2% animals exhibited estrus within 36-48, 48-60 and 60-72 hrs of withdrawal of sponges, respectively. Artificial insemination was carried out in estrus exhibited animals. Pregnancy was confirmed by rectal examination after three months of insemination in all the inseminated animals. Out of animals induced to estrus using progesterone impregnated intravaginal sponges and inseminated, about 62.4% cows and 57.29% buffaloes were confirmed pregnant.
