Abstract
he detail analysis of rainfall is a critical for resource planning in agriculture. The present study was undertaken to study the variation in rainfall pattern among, various stations of Ballari district. Since, rainfall has lot of temporal and spatial variations. The daily rainfall data of 35 years (1978-2012) were considered for the present study. The various statistical rainfall parameters were analyzed on annual, seasonal, monthly, weekly and daily basis. The CV of annual rainfall exceeded the threshold limit (> 25%) at all the stations except HB Halli and Hadagali, which highlights the extremely eractic distribution of rainfall over various stations of the Ballari district. The kharif season rainfall contribution towards total annual rainfall varied from 53% (Ballari and Kurikoppa) to 68% (Hacholi). The mean onset of rainy season was observed to be from 25th SMW to 28th SMW and the length of rainy season varied from 14 weeks to 18 weeks at various stations. The dry spell analysis showed early, mid-season and late season droughts with varying probability intensities. The total number of drought years were found to be same by both IMD and SPI criteria. However, magnitudes of drought (mild, moderate and severe) varied slightly. The various rainfall amounts were derived through probability analysis for various soil and water conservation measures. The optimal sowing dates were suggested for sunflower, maize, groundnut, sorghum and cotton for Ballari district. The potential weeks for rainwater harvesting varied from 2 weeks to 6 weeks during rainy season at various stations at Ballari district.
