Abstract
The present investigation was intended to estimate the self fertility, genetic
variability, character association and molecular diversity in sunflower inbreds and hybrids.
Field experiment was conducted at UAS Raichur during rabi 2013-14, involving 34 inbreds,
20 single cross hybrids, 53 three way cross hybrids and eight check hybrids. Seed setting
under selfed condition was assessed by bagging flower heads at the time of flowering..
Majority of the genotypes recorded higher per cent seed setting under open pollinated
conditions compared to selfing. Highest per cent self fertility (89.47 %) was recorded in
single cross hybrids followed by inbred lines (80.59 %) and three way cross hybrids (65.30
%). Few hybrids exhibited higher seed setting under selfed conditions indicating their high
self fertility. Selfed heads produced more of chaffy seeds in hybrids (258.34) and in inbreds
(126.94) than the open pollinated heads of hybrids (82.35) and inbreds (50.59).
There was considerable range of variation in the entries for all the eleven characters
studied. Genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variations were high for seed yield per
plant, test weight, per cent seed setting under selfing, per cent self fertility, head diameter.
High heritability was exhibited for all the characters. High genetic advance as per cent of
mean was exhibited for majority of the character.
Over all the seed yield per plant had significant positive association with head
diameter, test weight, plant height, volume weight, seed setting under selfed condition, per
cent seed setting under open condition and per cent self fertility. Hence, effective selection
based on these traits would ultimately useful for improving the seed yield.
