Abstract
The daily rainfall data of 35 years (1978 – 2012) of fourteen stations over Raichur district were selected for the present study. The variability among different stations were studied on annual, seasonal, monthly, weekly and daily basis to characterize the rainfall pattern over the district. The average annual rainy days varied from 24 days at Galag and Kavital to 36 days at Raichur. The length of rainy season ranged from 13 weeks (Turvihal) to 17 weeks (Devadurga, Hatti, Raichur and Yeramarus). The onset and withdrawal of rainy season along with probabilities were derived. The weekly dry and wet spell probabilities were derived to have the precise knowledge on dry spells and potential weeks for water harvesting. Out of 35 years of study, the drought years varied from 16 years at Rajalbanda to 24 years at Turvihal as per IMD criteria. The weekly expected rainfall ware derived at 10, 25, 50, 75 and 90 % probability levels. The one day and upto five consecutive days maximum rainfall for different return periods were obtained which will be useful in designing of soil and water conservation and hydraulic structures. The crop planning was suggested based on dry spell and length of rainy season. The in-situ moisture conservation practices and potential water harvesting periods were suggested based on weekly dry and wet spell analysis respectively.
