Abstract
The present investigation entitled “Efficacy of plant growth regulators on growth, flowering, yield and quality of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cv Malini under shade net conditions” was carried out during the late rabi season of the year 2018–19 in completely randomized design (CRD) by application of different concentrations of plant growth regulators viz. GA3 (75,150 and 250 ppm), Ethrel (100, 200 and 300 ppm) and Salicylic acid (75,150 and 250 ppm) along with control in three replications at the College of Horticulture, Mojerla. The results related to growth parameters revealed that GA3 at 75 ppm recorded maximum for vine length, length of primary branches per vine, number of leaves per vine, number of nodes on vine and leaf area at different growth stages as compared to the other treatments. Further, ethrel at 300 ppm recorded more number of primary branches per vine at different growth stages of the cucumber. Among all treatments, maximum internodal distance was recorded in plants treated with GA3 at 250 ppm over other treatments. With respect to phenological parameters, treatment with ethrel at 300 ppm exhibited the best results for the minimum number of days taken for first female flower appearance (38.88 days), least node number of first female flower appearance (6.77) and lowest male to female sex ratio (1.40:1) as compared to other treatments, whereas treatment GA3 at 150 ppm recorded minimum number of days taken to initiation of male flowering (33.74 days), minimum days taken for 50 per cent flowering (44.91 days) and time taken for first harvesting (51.80 days) over other treatments. The results pertaining to the yield parameters indicated that the highest values for fruit length (21.23 cm), fruit diameter (4.20 cm), fruit weight (248.00 g), number of fruits per vine (9.46) and maximum fruit yield (165.17 t/ ha) were recorded in the treatment of GA3 at 75 ppm sprayed at 20 and 35 days after sowing and maximum days taken for final harvest (86.49 days) was recorded in the treatment of GA3 at 250 ppm as compared to other treatments. The data related to quality parameters indicated that ethrel treatment at 300 ppm found superior for total soluble solids (5.88 ̊ Brix) and minimum physiological loss in weight after harvesting (1 DAH, 5 DAH and 10 DAH) was recorded in GA3 treatment at 250 ppm sprayed at 20 and 35 days after sowing. The vines treated with ethrel were found with smooth texture fruits and the remaining treatments fruits were with rough texture. Data on economics indicated that among all plant growth regulators, GA3 at 75 ppm (T1) sprayed at 20 and 35 days after sowing recorded with maximum gross returns (Rs.16, 51,700), net returns (Rs.11, 27,783.22) and best B: C (2.15) ratio over other treatments.
