EFFECT OF LACTIC ACID BACTERIA AND BIFIDOBACTERIA ON THE GROWTH OF CAMPYLOBACTER JEJUNI ISOLATED FROM RAW MILK SAMPLES IN CHENNAI, INDIA.

Abstract
The inhibitory activity of lactic acid bacteria were tested against 10 randomly selected isolates of Campylobacter jejuni out of 42 isolates obtained from 3099 raw milk samples of local vendors of Chennai region in India. Among the tested lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria for their antagonistic activity, the cell free supernatant of L4 acidophi/us and L. delbrueckii ssp. helveticus inhibited the growth of tested C. jejuni isolates in vitro where as Lactobac/I/us delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus, Bifidobacterium bifidum and Bifidobacterium Iongum failed to show any inhibition to the tested isolates.
