This study makes an attempt to understand the status of financial services of smallholder dairy farmers in Tamil Nadu, India through direct interview of 410 dairy farmers. This study found that the reachability of institutional financial services were limited. Even after entry of private banks, micro financial institutions to the existing pool of institutional financial service providers (public sector and co-operative banks) in the post liberation era, non institutional lenders such as milk vendors and agents and money lenders have substantial roles in providing credit to dairying with high interest rates.
