Abstract
In order to estimate the genetic variability among 22 potato genotypes as well as to
study the association among yield attributing traits, Physico- biochemical characters, yield
and economics, the present investigation was conducted at the research farm of All India
Coordinated Research Project on potato, OUAT , Bhubaneswar during the period from
November 2018 to March 2019. The experiment was carried out in randomized block design
with four replications. All the genotypes varied significantly from each other for almost all
the characters studied. The phenotypic coefficient of variation was found to be higher than
the respective genotypic coefficient of variation values for all the characters under study.
Some of the characters like plant height at 30 days, shoots per plant at 30 days, 45 days and
60 days, leaf area, fresh root and shoot biomass, total chlorophyll and carotenoid content of
leaves, ascorbic acid and reducing sugar content of tuber exhibited high heritability along
with high genetic advance over mean indicating that heritability may be due to additive
effects and selection may be effective. Plant height, number of shoots per plant and
compound leaves, and weight of tuber had significant positive correlation with tuber yield,
which shows that potato yield can be increased by improving these characters. Reducing
sugar, ascorbic acid, total chlorophyll and carotenoid content were negatively correlated with
yield. Path analysis revealed plant height at 45 days, Shoots per plant at 45days, compound
leaf breadth, leaf area, number of compound leaves per plant and yield per plant at 60days
exhibited positive direct effect with yield per plant at 75 days while other characters like
height at 30 days and 60 days, shoots per plant at 30 days and 60 days, compound leaf length
exhibited direct negative effect on yield per plant at 75 days. Highest tuber yield per ha was
exhibited by Kufri Pushkar (24.34 t/ha) and the lowest by Sel-18 of Phulbani local
(11.88t/ha). Among the coloured skin potato genotypes, highest tuber yield of 23.69t/ha was
exhibited by AICRP-P-45 which was at par with Kufri Pushkar. Other coloured skin
genotypes with production of more than 20t/ha were Kufri Neelkanth (22.95 t/ha),AICRP-P-
35(22.35 t/ha), AICRP-P-46(21.71 t/ha), AICRP P-26(20.84t/ha) and Kufri Sinduri (20.35
t/ha). Coloured genotypes can fetch better price in market due to their better nutritional
quality and appealing colour. Keeping in view the popularity of baby potato “Sel-18 of
Phulbani local” can also be a good choice in spite of its low yield.
