Abstract
The present investigation, entitled “Generation mean analysis in Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.)” was undertaken by using six generations viz., P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 derived from three crosses namely Pusa Jwala x Hingoli Local, DCC-25 x G-4 and BD-I x G-4. The material was evaluated in a Randomized Block Design with two replicates during summer 2019. The character were studied, plant height (cm), number of branches per plant, days to first flower, days to 50 % flowering, days to first harvest of green chilli, length of fruits (cm), diameter of fruits (mm), weight of fruits (g), pedicel length (cm), green fruits per plant, green fruit yield per plant (g), green fruit yield per plot (kg), green fruit yield per hectare (q), per cent incidence of disease (leaf curl) and pest (thrips). Analysis of variance for yield and yield components showed highly significant differences among the genotypes which indicated that the presence of substantial variability in the material under study. Mean performance of different characters, the parents DCC-25, G-4 and BD-I showed superior performance than the rest of parents. The cross combinations DCC-25 x G-4 and Pusa Jwala x Hingoli Local were observed superior than the rest of crosses. The scaling test indicates the presence of non-allelic gene interaction in all the crosses. Means and standard errors were worked out and used for calculating gene effects. The estimate gene effect for different characters in three crosses showed that duplicate and complimentary type of epistasis. Duplicate epistasis was preponderance in most of the characters and suggests that improvement of traits by transgressive selection and complimentary type epistasis suggests for improvement in traits by hybridization method. Magnitude of heterosis was calculated over better and mid parent. The cross combinations DCC-25 x G-4 and BD-I x G-4 showed significant heterosis over better and mid parent. The inbreeding depression were positively and negatively lower significant indicate that the presence of vigour in F2’s can be attributed to additive and epistatic gene action. Narrow sense heritability was important for crop improvement of yield contributing character. High to low narrow sense heritability was exhibited by different characters and play important role in selection of population for crop improvement in chilli. Highest narrow sense heritability was observed in the cross DCC-25 x G-4.
