Study on Morphological Traits in Indigenous Jallikattu Bulls of Tamil Nadu

Abstract
The study was conducted in Madurai, Dindigul and Trichy districts of Tamil Nadu, where farmers are rearing the jallikattu bulls and the morphological traits were recorded in 232 sporting bulls belonging to Pulikulam, Kangayam, Umblachery and non-descript. The data were analysed using chi-square test to distinguish the differences among genetic groups. The genetic groups viz.Pulikulam, Kangayam, Umblachery and non-descript, were found to be highly significant (P<0.01) source of variation in respect to coat colour, body greyness, eyelid colour, ear shape, hump size, horn size and orientation, tail length and tail switch. This kind of phenotypic traits should be correlated with on-field sporting traits to elucidate the importance of morphological traits in Jallikattu bulls.
