Abstract
The research study entitled “A Study on Impact of Calf Rearing Scheme in
Cuttack District of Odisha” was carried out in Cuttack district of Odisha. 200
respondents were selected in total, taking 100 each from beneficiary and nonbeneficiary
category. They were selected on the basis of having at least three years of
experience in their respective vocation from five blocks of Cuttack district. Age,
education, family type, annual income etc. were taken as independent variables, and
level of impact of the scheme like social, economic and communication behaviour
were taken as dependent variables. 96 per cent of the beneficiaries were within 50
years of age. Maximum number of beneficiaries (60 per cent) had not attended
school. 98 per cent of beneficiaries were having nuclear family and only 2 per cent
live in joint families. Families of 60 per cent of beneficiaries were having 3 to 5
members. Maximum of the respondents i.e. 70 per cent of beneficiaries belonged to
General Caste followed by 20 per cent Other Backward Classes and 8 per cent
Scheduled Caste. Among non- beneficiaries, 52 per cent were from General Caste, 33
per cent from Other Backward Classes and 10 per cent from Scheduled Caste. 76 per
cent of the beneficiaries and 74 per cent of the non- beneficiaries had semi-pucca
houses respectively. 65 per cent of the beneficiaries were having 10-20 numbers of
dairy cattle followed by 25 per cent having more than 20 numbers of dairy cattle. 63
per cent of beneficiaries were having an annual income of above 1 lakh, while 40 per
cent of the non- beneficiaries having the same income level. The number of dairy
cattle owned by beneficiaries is significantly correlated with their education and
family size. The Calf Rearing Scheme is having considerable impact on socioeconomic
status of the beneficiaries as compared to non- beneficiaries. Medium level
of social impact falls upon 72 per cent of the beneficiaries, medium level of economic
impact upon 69 per cent of the beneficiaries and medium level of impact on
communication behaviour upon 73 per cent of the beneficiaries. Moreover, Calf
Rearing Scheme has a marked bearing on the reproductive and productive traits of the
female crossbred calves enrolled under the scheme. There are also certain constraints
encountered during the course of the implementation of the scheme, which may be
social, economic, technological and extension support constraints. Owing to the
overwhelming impact of the calf rearing in raising the socio-economic status of the
beneficiaries as well as marked improvement in the productive and reproductive traits
xv
of the heifers, the outcome of the scheme may serve as a path finder to alike projects
and schemes of government and non-governmental organizations in future. Such type
of programmes may be carried out on a war-footing to harness the genetic potential of
calves, right from the budding stage which will enable the farmers to adopt dairy
farming as a viable and profitable enterprise.
