Abstract
The present studies entitled “Hybridization studies in Tomato (Solanum
lycopersicum L.) through Diallel Mating Design” were carried out at the Vegetable
Production Block (under protected condition), Tigaddu during the year 2016-17. The
experimental material for the present study comprised of six parents and F1 population of
fifteencrosses, developed by crossing these six diverse tomato lines in diallel design
(excluding reciprocals). All theparents and their hybrids along with the standard check
(Arka Rakshak) were planted in a Randomized Complete BlockDesign for their evaluation
in December, 2016. The observations were recorded on plant height (cm), number of fruit
clusters per plant, number of fruits per cluster, number of fruits per plant, fruit length
(mm), fruit breadth (mm), average fruit weight (g), fruit volume (mL), marketable fruit
yield per plant (Kg), harvest duration (days), pericarp thickness (mm), shelf life (days),
TSS (0brix), ascorbic acid (mg/100g) and whitefly infestation (%). The analysis of variance
indicated highly significantdifferences among the genotypes for all the traits studied.
Experimental results revealed that two lines viz, AVTO-9001 and Sioux were found
superior on the basis of mean performance and general combiningability studies. Four
cross combinations viz, Solan lalima × Sioux, LC-9 × Sioux, Sioux × Arka Meghali and
AVTO-9001 × Sioux were found best on the basis of meanperformance, specific
combining ability and heterosis studies. Hence, these hybrid combinations can be
testedfurther at multiplications before releasing as a substitute of already existing hybrid
varieties of tomato. Gene action studies indicated predominance of dominance effects in
governing mostof the traits suggesting exploitation of hybrid vigour and developing
hybrids for improvement of these traits intomato on the basis of present studies.
