Abstract
Experiments under present study entitled “Studies on seedling emergence, crop performance and vigour assessment in bitter gourd (Momordica charantia l.)” were undertaken during 2017- 2018 at the Regional Station, Karnal, Division of Seed Science and Technology, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, IARI, New Delhi. Halo- priming(KNO3 1%for 48 h), solid matrix priming (moist vermiculite for 48 h), osmo priming (PEG-6000 for 96 h), bio priming (Trichodermaviride,10g/Kg) and hydropriming treatments were optimized for improved germination in bittergourd seed. Best priming treatment in each category was analysed on three cultivar of bitter gourd viz. Pusa Aushadhi, Pusa Do Mausami and Pusa Rasdar. Halo priming using KNO3 1% for 48 h seed soaking improved seed germination and vigour significantly as compared to hydro priming and control.Halopriming improved seed germination by 26.2%, 32.0% and 28.7% at 25°C, 20°C and 15°C, respectively over control.Standard germination (r=0.941**) and Accelerated ageing test (r=0.917**) showed positive correlation withfield emergence in 10 bitter gourd seed lots. Coefficient of determination values for standard germination (R2=0.88***) and accelerated ageing test (R2=0.84***) explain 88% and 84% variation in field emergence of bitter gourd seed lots. Planting method and spacing had no significant effect on seed emergence, days to first male flower opening and days to first female flower opening. Number of fruit, fruit weight, fruit length and number of seeds/fruit in trellis method as compare to bed furrow method. Trellis method at spacing (2m x 0.45m) gave highest seed yield per hectare (173.3Kg/ha) as compare to bed furrow at2m x 0.30m spacing (99.1 Kg/ha). Seed harvested from trellis method have higher germination percentage (83.2%), seedling vigour index-I(3061.2) and II (25.66) as compare to bed furrow method. The results suggest that seed germination; vigour and field emergence in bitter gourd can be improved by priming seed with KNO3 1% for 48 h. Standard germination and accelerated ageing test can successfully predict seedling emergence potential of biitter gourd seed lots.. Seed yield and quality of bitter gourd can be improved by trellis method at spacing of 2m x 0.45m. Key words : Priming, KNO3 , bitter gourd ,Germination, seed yield
